Even though we artists might not make a lot of sales displaying our art in the libraries, our contributions to the art and culture of the area is immense. When we put our art in the library, we not only remind the public what talented, creative artists live here, but how much we care about the community as a whole. One of the things we contribute to our community as artists is culture. By displaying our stuff in the libraries, we bring art to life for the general public. Although it is not directly about sales, one of the ways that we artists in Fresno and Clovis convince the buying public how wonderful is our art and photography (and indirectly to buy that art) is the development of a reputation for being a center of art and culture. Sometimes we have to give before we can get.

Does the art world exist or is it a figment of our imagination?

Does the "Art World" actually exist? This topic was started on Linkedin with the preface that the art world exists only in our imagination. While this is an interesting concept I disagree: I do believe the art world is real . We create art that we (the artists) like to look at or we wouldn’t be creating it. If our creation resonates with the public, then we get recognized by the “Art world”. Artists, who have been recognized, never question whether or not the “Art World” exists.
The local art world certainly exists for all of us who have contact with other artists. As to the question is there is a vast "art world" out there, whether or not it exists for individual artists depends on the definition of it: Recognition by buyers? Well we all know the buyers are out there. Getting found by them is another matter. Recognition by the news media? Again the issue is which artists are they looking at? Certainly there are trends in what is considered popular in art. Who sets these trends? Well, I think ultimately they are set by ideas of what people want to see in their homes or offices: Art that people like to look at. It is up to us whether or not we make use of these trends to be recognized by the “Art World” at large.

Gotta Love ATand T U-Verse

Does Customer Service Really Serve Us?

Gotta love AT&T. Recently our family outgrew our home wireless connection. We had five separate devices that need to use the wireless modem and the old one couldn’t handle more than four. Since we anticipated adding more Apple products in 2012 which are very dependent on being able to link to the internet, I called up our internet provider (AT&T) who suggested that we upgrade to U-verse. Well, it sounded pretty good; I was told that at least ten different devices could be added to the new modem. Now there were a number of things the sales rep only being interested in making a sale, didn’t tell me but I had been pretty clear in describing the type of devices we had and were intending to add. Of course it wasn’t free; there was a one-time charge of almost $300, but once it was paid our regular rate would go back to normal. So, we signed up and the newsystem was duly installed.

Since I was already an on-line customer of AT&T and used their site to pay my monthly bills, I assumed (erroneously as it turned out) that I was already registered as a customer. Unfortunately, AT&T did NOT inform me that the two (U-verse & AT&T) although they apparently share the same site: AT&T.com, are not the same. I was a little puzzled when I went to the site to pay my monthly bill and the installation charge was not shown on the account, but I paid the amount required and then the next day AT&T shut down my phone and internet service. I couldn’t even call them on the house phone to ask what was going on; I had to use my cell phone!

After some wrangling with the telephone customer service, I was finally put thorough to a supervisor who turned everything back on, and I arranged to pay the installation fee and December’s payment. I was told to go to the site and re-register as a U-Verse customer. Now this was at 10:00 am in the morning. please note the time as it is important; the subsequent time it
took to solve the next two problems was approximately seven hours. Problem 1) Attempting to register with U-Verse and then 2) attempting to set up our I-phone which had been under the old wireless connection under U-verse.

Okay, I went back to the site and hit my first hurdle; it told me I was already registered but I wasn’t able to log into the site. Not being happy with my experience with the telephone customer service, I elected to try the live chat option under help. The first thing I was told to do when I
went to log in was close the site. After some difficulty accessing the site again (the link they gave me apparently doesn’t exist) I went back to AT&T.com and tried to log in. Which I was able to do, however they demanded that my husband’s internet e-mail account be the “primary” e-mail on the U-verse account. This didn’t seem to be a problem until I tested his e-mail to confirm the message. You see. I had set up a different password for the U-Verse account because nobody but a fool would use an e-mail associated with financial transactions as an internet log in. Apparently AT&T U-Verse programmers are fools. After some fruitless back and forth I had to concede that I was stuck. By 1:-00 pm the on-line chat helpand I had restored my husband’s original internet log in.

Since the on-line chat help had been moderately successful (I am still stuck with the log in, but they did help me to register and learn how to make sure that when I go to the site, I can get to the U-Verse portion of the site to conduct business) when the I-Phone wouldn’t connect, I tried them again. Imagine my surprise when I was told that AT&T didn’t support Apple products, but I could go to a “fee-based” site and get help. They also suggested we re-boot the I-Phone or go the manufacturer. Now everyone who has one knows what a time-consuming pain re-booting can be is! So we tried the Apple help site. Their suggestion was to hit the re-set button on the wireless modem. It worked. Gotta love At&T; they never suggested it might be their equipment that was a fault! It was now 4:00 p.m. Time taken to resolve these problems approximately 7 hours.

very excited about the debut of my new books

I’m very excited about the debut of my new books Modern Artists Handbook the Addendum to the Modern Artist Handbook and Art Show Basics. It gives a brief overview of such topics as internet scams, using social networking sites
to market your art, presentation, how do copyright laws affect artists, juried art shows, and answers basic questions such as what is viral marketing, QR codes, digital watermarking, etc. The Addendum to the Modern Artist Handbook: The Hard Stuff — ($10.00) contains much more extensive information about taxes, licenses, insurance and record keeping. There is also a special bonussection on prepping for a booth event. Volume 3 Art Show Basics— ($10.00): covers information needed to put on either a one-man show or a group show, along with a sample venue contract, show budget check list, log-in sheets, etc. For an additional $5.00, a CD with usable copies of the contracts and forms discussed in the pamphlets is also available. The lived off the land, and earned a marginal living by trapping and hunting.
